With the start of 2017 well and truly underway, we generally start to turn our focus towards our ‘New Years Resolutions’. However 92% of people who make resolutions fail to reach their goal which is astounding. If you haven’t already read our recent blog around new years resolutions, then click here:
But I am a big fan of making a ‘start’ to reach a goal and I suppose January 1 is as good as any other day to start. I really want you to have continued, sustained success this year and that is what this blog will teach you.
Here are the 5 Crucial Steps to Lead a Healthier Lifestyle for 2017 and beyond:
1) GET YOUR NUTRITION RIGHT
It’s an old saying but ‘You are what you eat’ is so true. To use an analogy, would you put Unleaded Octane 91 into a $300,000 Porsche? Well if you did, it wouldn’t work anymore and that’s how you have to treat your body! Start to reduce the amount of sugar, salt and flour products you consume and also those sneaky fatty takeaways. Also, start to reduce the amount of alcohol you consume.
However the most important step is to follow a nutritionally dense eating program that is fun and easy to understand. This is where we can show you how with Isagenix! Check out the link below that will provide some more information around how you can start fuelling your body with the right nutrition.
2) SET A CLEAR DEFINED GOAL AND YOUR ‘WHY’
During my 10 years as a personal trainer, the first question I would ask my clients is ‘what do you want to achieve?’ If I got a dollar for every time I heard the answer ‘lose weight and tone up’, I would be a gazillionaire by now! A better example would be, “I want to fit into that size 10 dress for my graduation ceremony by June 30th”. This is a clear defined goal.
But more importantly, I want you to write down your answer to this question – “What pain am I in right now and how does that make me feel right now?” (eg I’m 20kgs overweight and it scares me to look at myself in the mirror let alone wear shorts outside. I’ve lost my self-confidence). Once you have written this down I now want you to write down the answer to this question “How do I want to feel and what will my life look like when I’m feeling like this?”. This folks, is your ‘Why’ and you need to write this down daily.
Go on, grab a pen and piece of paper right now and start writing!
3) START EXERCISING
This is not rocket science or is it? Seriously though for any type of fitness goal, you need to get off your butt and start moving. If you have some type of weight loss goal, remember this simple equation: IF CALORIES EXPENDED IS GREATER THAN CALORIES INGESTED THIS = WEIGHT LOSS!
But don’t try to go from zero to hero and try to run a marathon straight away. This is a sure fire way to ensure that you don’t turn up for your second session! Build up your exercise and set smaller milestones to begin with. Mix it up with some interval running, bike riding, group exercise classes or participate in a sport you enjoy. As a former personal trainer, why not invest in yourself with a PT session rather than spend your $100 a week you are spending on coffees and junk food? Just get off your butt and watch the magic happen!
4) GET ADEQUATE SLEEP/REST
This area has only just started to reach the masses but during my days as an elite athlete, I understood that rest was as important as the training I was doing each day. The recommended guidelines for 18-65 year olds is 7-9 hours per night. This reduces to 7-8 hours if you are over 65. Establish a regular relaxing bedtime routine that could include reading a book, taking a warm bath/shower or doing some light stretches. Limit your day time naps to no longer than 30 minutes and avoid caffeine or sugar late at night. These are some of the benefits of sleep:
– Improved memory
– Curb inflammation
– Improve performance
– Spur creativity
– Improve academic achievement
– Sharpen attention
– Improve weight loss
– Lower stress
– Avoid accidents
– Improve your immune system
– Concentrate better
– Make better informed decisions
– Live longer
– Improved sex life.
WAIT!!! You can get all these just by getting consistently better sleep? I’M IN!!!
5) PAY IT FORWARD
Now this is a step that you generally don’t hear when talking of leading a healthier lifestyle. The definition of ‘Pay It Forward’ is “when someone does something for you, instead of paying that person back directly, you pass it on to another person instead”. How will that help you?
Well firstly, by sharing this information with your nearest and dearest, you will be able to support each other and push each other to achieve your health goals and secondly, why keep any of this information secret when you can help others?!?!
